Harry and Meghan’s love story began some two years before their wedding day when the couple were introduced by a mutual friend; appropriately, with Meghan’s acting background, it was a meeting that would not have looked out of place in a Hollywood romance. At the time, May 2016, Meghan was based in Toronto where she was one of the stars in the television legal drama Suits, and Harry was visiting the city to launch the Invictus Games, the sporting event for disabled athletes that he had helped to set up.
With them both in the same location, the friend – whom the couple have declined to name – sensing that Harry and Meghan might get along, decided to do a little matchmaking and she set the pair up on a blind date. Meghan, who confessed to knowing very little about the royal family at that time, had only one question for her friend – nevertheless, for her, a very important one: ‘Is he nice?’ In Meghan’s view, it was essential that her date should be a kind man, if she was to spend a worthwhile evening with him. Fortunately, the response was affirmative and so the two met up for a drink.
Meghan, as an American, knew very little about Prince Harry, but neither did Harry have any knowledge of her, having never seen the television show Suits. As a result, at this first meeting, neither had any preconceptions of what to expect from the other, something that Harry in particular found refreshing as it meant they could get to know each other as people rather than as ‘celebrities’ with established public images. The time flew by during that first meeting and both found themselves thinking, ‘I would like to see this person again.’
